Stellar 2009 Lineup at the Grand Ole Opry

What do Carrie Underwood, Trace Adkins, Dierks Bentley, and Darryl Worley have in common? Not only are they mega-stars, but they are all scheduled to grace the stage of the Grand Ole Opry this season. The Opry has a killer lineup this year, and country music fans who can definitely should make it a priority to get over to Nashville to catch a show.

Tuesday Night Opry is back in session, and several notable performers will be appearing, including Charlie Daniels, Diamond Rio, and Craig Morgan. The Opry also recently kicked off a new Thursday night series called Opry Country Classics, which showcases some of the most groundbreaking country music that paved the way for country artists and made the genre as well-loved and appreciated as it is today.

Since its start as a radio show in 1925, the Grand Ole Opry - originally known as WSM Barn Dance - has been a major launching off point for country music performers, giving birth to many of today’s brightest stars. Many performers feel that they owe their start in the business to the Opry, and in a lot of ways they are right. The platform that the venue provides for artists is unparalleled and the exposure they are given is hard to duplicate anywhere else. Many a life has been transformed by experiences on the famous stage, and I suspect that this will continue far into the future.

To secure tickets to the show of your choice, it is imperative that you book early. The Opry is a big seller among locals and visitors to Nashville, and the window of opportunity for getting tickets is pretty narrow. Regardless of when you decide to visit, it is sure to be an evening to remember. One of the best ways to secure tickets is through http://www.nashvillesightseeing.com or http://viptickets.us.

Nashville by Day or by Night

Enjoy the sights and sounds of one of America’s greatest cities: Nashville, home of the Grand Ole Opry and the famous Music Row area that houses hundreds of businesses related to country, gospel, and contemporary Christian music.  Legions of stars currently call Nashville home, including country music greats Dolly Parton, Martina McBride, and Trisha Yearwood.

While you are in the area, be sure to check out the Nashville City Tour, which hits several of the city’s landmarks in a three-hour span of time.  It gives a wonderful and complete overview of historic Nashville and the major landmarks of the city and includes trips to Music Row, the State Capitol, the Country Music Hall of Fame, and the famous Ryman Auditorium, former home of the Grand Ole Opry.  The tour ends perfectly with a dose of live country music and refreshments at one of the downtown Honky Tonks.

For a crash course on Nashville’s nightlife, check out the Nashville Nights Tour where you can watch Nashville come alive at night as you visit several clubs on Honky Tonk Row and enjoy live music and a complimentary drink.  What better way to truly grasp the spirit of the city than to embrace it yourself with a night out on the town?

Country music is not the only reason to visit this great city, however.  The General Jackson is the world’s largest showboat and its cruises are among Nashville’s most popular activities.  Enjoy a lunch or dinner cruise and show, which lasts about 3 to 4 hours and provides for a fun and entertaining time for adults and kids of all ages.

There are also a variety of other tour options, from trolley tours to a Jack Daniels Distillery Tour and everything in between.  For more on this great city and to book tours and activities in the area, visit www.nashvillesightseeing.com.

A Night of Entertainment and Fun Aboard the General Jackson

When you travel to Nashville, one of the first things on your to-do list should be booking a trip on the General Jackson Showboat.  This is an excellent nighttime activity to do with the family, and a great option is the General Jackson Dinner Cruise & Show.  The showboat is tremendous, at 300 feet long, and there is no shortage of things to do on board.

The cruise includes a night of entertainment with the brilliant new show “NashVegas on the River.”  The show is packed with performances by celebrity impersonators and they put on a hilarious and high-energy show.  “Elton John” and “Tina Turner” are there, as is an Elvis impersonator.  The cast is filled with highly-skilled entertainers straight off the Las Vegas scene.

Another option is the lunch cruises, which feature performances by the Peking Acrobats and these are a great idea if you have children.  A visit to either the Nashville Wax Museum or the Willie Nelson Museum is included and takes place before the cruise.

This is a fantastic way to spend the evening, and everyone in the family  will thoroughly enjoy themselves.  I would highly recommend this cruise to anyone who is ready to relax and be entertained.  If you plan on coming back in the earlier part of spring make sure to catch the Broadway-style musical revue called “Sing.” It is sure to entertain even the toughest critics.

Now Entering Music City, USA

When you think of Nashville, what is the first thought that comes into your head? Country music of course! Nashville is a vibrant city with music to the core.  It is the home of the legendary Grand Ole Opry.  The Opry was started as a live country music radio show called WSM Barn Dance, which was housed on the fifth floor of a radio station studio, but the audience soon became so large that it could no longer fit in that space.  After several moves it eventually settled into the Ryman Auditorium where it stayed until 1974 when it moved to the Grand Ole Opry House.

Downtown Nashville Tennessee
Downtown Nashville Tennessee

Today, you would be hard-pressed to find someone who hasn’t heard of the Grand Ole Opry and how it has launched the careers of so many successful key players in the country music business such as LeAnn Rimes, Dolly Parton, and Loretta Lynn.  I recently took in a show and was hypnotized by the scope of it all and felt like I was witnessing history in the making.  For aspiring country music stars, it is an honor to be asked to perform at the Grand Ole Opry, and to watch the relatively unknown performers on stage is to watch the beginnings of a new life unfolding for them.  A day at the Opry for a performer can kick a performer’s career into overdrive, and many of today’s country superstars have been transformed by this life-altering experience.

The show lasts about 2 ½ hours and it is well worth every penny you will spend on tickets.  I was able to sit back and enjoy the show while knowing that my transportation was taken care of, since round-trip transportation was included with the package I purchased.  You may decide to purchase tickets with or without this option, depending on if you plan to stay around the area before and after the show.  This trip is a must-see, but it sells out fast so be sure to buy tickets well in advance of your trip.  It will be a day to remember forever- the day that new stars were born.

While you are in the area, you will want to check out the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, located just a few steps from the Ryman Auditorium.  The museum chronicles the story of country music with a collection of video clips, recordings, exhibits, and dynamic live performances.  If there is time, I also recommend visiting the Grand Ole Opry Museum and The Opry Shop for a closer look at the history of the Opry and to take home a keepsake to remember the occasion.

You can purchase tickets to the Grand Ole Opry online with convenient e-ticketing.
