One of the stops on the tour is the Edmondston-Alston House, which houses the valuable possessions of the Alston family including their paintings, furniture, books, and silver which remain in virtually the same place they have been for the last 150 years.  Many of the treasures were collected on family trips abroad.

Next, you will visit the Nathaniel Russell House, circa 1808, located in one of the most exclusive residential neighborhoods amid the canopied streets of this gorgeous area.  This house is an incredible sight, with its elaborate designs and geometrically shaped rooms.  Other historic sights along the way include the historic Rainbow Row, where houses are painted all in pastels, the High Battery, St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, and the historic County Courthouse and City Hall.  You will also have an amazing view of Charleston Harbor and Fort Sumter, where the first shots were fired marking the beginning of the Civil War.

This tour is a must for those wishing to capture the brilliance and charm that is Charleston.  With its rich history and lovely architecture, tied together by an expert tour guide, you are sure to have a fun and educational time to remember for years to come.

Charleston, a City Enduring History

When you first arrive in Charleston, I would highly recommend taking a comprehensive Charleston Tour by Minibus to orient you to the area and show you some of the city highlights. This tour is 75 minutes packed with history and dramatic scenery. You will get to look out at the view of Charleston Harbor at historic Fort Sumter and hear about the Confederate submarine, Hunley. Many movies were shot on location here, including ‘The Patriot’ and ‘Cold Mountain,’ and you will get clarification on their historical context during the tour.

charleston-tour-by-minibus2Along the way you will see the beautifully painted houses on Rainbow Row, the Market - which is essentially 3 blocks of open air market with produce, handmade crafts, restaurants and shops - and scores of historic houses and churches. The great part about this tour is that with all that ground to cover it is nice to see it from the comfort of an air-conditioned minibus so you don’t have to worry about transportation from point A to point B and having to navigate around the city streets on foot.

This tour allows you to travel through history to the times of the slave trade, the Civil War, and the original ‘Walled City’ as you are driven through the narrow streets of Charleston and are provided with unrestricted access to the Historic District. It gives you a great view of many of the homes and churches that have made this city famous, and after this tour you will definitely want to venture out in the city to take advantage of all it has to offer.

Historic Sights Come Alive in Charleston

For water babies and those just looking for a good way to relax after a long day of walking, there is no better way to see Charleston than from the observation deck of a historic harbor boat.  On the Historic Harbor Boat Tour in Charleston, you will see St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, which was painted black during the Revolutionary and Civil Wars to avoid being an easy target and has somehow managed to be spared from destruction against all odds.  Now painted white again, this is quite a sight as it is in excellent shape considering all it has been through.  You will also see some of the stately homes along the Battery that have endured through the worst of times and a host of natural disasters including hurricanes and earthquakes, and of course war.

The boat tour takes you past forts Moultrie, Johnson, and Sumter, which have all played a pivotal role in American history, and you will also pass Patriot’s Point, the home of Yorktown.  Throughout the ride you will likely see some beautiful displays of nature, as a dolphin feeds on the water’s surface or a bird swoops down over the water to catch a fish.  This is an excellent opportunity to sightsee and watch as nature takes its course.

On board you will have access to two decks, both providing an exquisite view of Charleston Harbor.  Bars are located on both decks for your convenience, and one deck serves as an observation deck while the other is used for dining.  The boat is a massive 85 feet long, so there is plenty of room on board for up to 300 passengers.  While the tour only lasts 90 minutes, you can feel free to purchase sandwiches and snacks while you are on board if you wish, whatever will make the ride the most comfortable for you.

Sail the Open Sea

If your vacation brings you to a location where a gentle breeze is common along beautiful smooth waters, then taking a ride aboard a sailboat would be an excellent choice.  No matter where you decide to spend your holiday, taking time out to enjoy yourself on the open water will be one of the best decisions you could make.

From one side of the country to the other, Sailboat Tours offers luxurious rides where you can relax, enjoy the scenery, and add a bit of adventure to your vacation.

One of the most popular tours is the Day Sail on San Francisco Bay.  The boat will take you right by Alcatraz Island where the infamous federal prison is located.  You will receive amazing views as you pass under the Golden Gate Bridge.  Depending on your preference, you can sail in the afternoon and check out all the sights, or drift through the water at sunset and witness the glowing sun set over the sparkling water.

The NaPali Snorkel Picnic Sail of Kauai is another fabulous sailing excursion.  The boat explores the rugged NaPali coast where you will see waterfalls and lava tubes.  The guide is extremely knowledgeable on the area and can let you in on the secret ancient legends of the civilizations that once inhabited NaPali.  Breakfast and lunch picnics are included as well as snorkel instruction and gear.  So not only do you get to take in the sights of the coastline but a chance to explore the crystal clear waters as well.

For a bit of romance during your stay in Key West, the Champagne Sunset Cruise is perfect.  The boat takes you along the smooth ocean so you can experience true bliss as you watch the large orange sun appear to melt into the heavenly waters.  Your seat in front of the breathtaking sunset is to die for.

In Chicago, you can travel in the evening aboard a large and lavish sailboat in hopes of sighting the largest mammals on our planet.  This whale watching cruise is one-of-a-kind and is a wonderful way to spend time with your family on the open water.  The cruise along Lake Michigan is great place to spot some whales and create memories to last a lifetime.

See if you can include a fun sailboat ride in your vacation by visiting Sailboat Tours’ website at www.sailboattours.net today!

Charleston in all of its Splendor

You can connect to the beauty of Charleston by joining a tour by mini-bus, horse-drawn carriage, boat, or on foot.  You can also see nearby Hilton Head Island by trolley or take a ride on a kayak on one of the creeks and rivers close by.  For a walk through history, there is the Boone Hall Plantation Tour in Charleston, where you will see the historic ‘Avenue of Oaks’ and take a walk through the famous grounds and gardens.  Knowledgeable guides will help by giving you an overview of plantation life in general as well as what it was like specifically living at Boone Hall.  Another popular plantation tour is the Magnolia Plantation Tour in Charleston, which features the area’s oldest plantation and what is regarded as ‘the most beautiful garden in the world.’ This tour also includes a tour of the plantation house and a fully narrated 45 minute tram ride through the rice fields and wildlife habitat.

To see Charleston by foot, take the Charleston Walk Tour which includes early highlights about the Carolina colony and Charleston’s endurance through the Civil War, American Revolution, and various natural disasters.  It will also touch on current preservation efforts in Charleston.  Some of the highlights of the tour include a trip to Charleston’s oldest church, a view of some historic mansions in the area, the Dock Street Theater, Fort Sumter – where the shots beginning the American Civil War were fired - and John C. Calhoun’s grave.  This walk is a comprehensive look at Charleston and its impact on history.

Fans of the classic movie ‘Gone with the Wind’ will be thrilled to find that there is a tour with you in mind.  The Gone with the Wind Charleston City & Mansion Tour shows you the French Quarter, the Market, Old Citadel, and the Rainbow Row of homes painted in pastels.  You will stop at the Battery overlooking Fort Sumter and will visit the Joseph Manigault House, an amazing southern mansion complemented by incredible architecture and fine antiques.

To see Charleston from the water, guests can take the Santee River Kayak Tour from Charleston and enjoy the Santee River all day as you paddle along the untouched and undeveloped lower portion of the river.  You may even see an alligator or some otters along the way.

Any of these tours will give you the introduction you need to one of the most beautiful cities in the world.  There are several combination packages to choose from that will allow you to see a little of everything, and I would highly recommend doing one of these while you are visiting the city.
