Affordable Tours Feature San Francisco Highlights

It is almost impossible to get to everything on one trip to San Francisco, but for those who are interested in a tour that provides a comprehensive overview of the city, the San Francisco City Tour is an excellent choice.  It departs several times daily from Fisherman’s Wharf and takes you past many of the major landmarks in the city, most notably the Golden Gate Bridge, Ghirardelli Square, and the Palace of Fine Arts.  It is often possible to stop at the Golden Gate Bridge and Twin Peaks, weather and traffic permitting.

This tour lasts for three and a half hours and is a great way to see many of the city’s landmarks under the tutelage of a friendly and informative tour guide.  The tour provides tremendous value and covers a wide variety of locations of interest, including but not limited to: Nob Hill, Golden Gate Park, the Financial District, the Opera House, and Union Square.

There is so much to see on this tour that you will never be bored.  I would give this exciting tour two thumbs up for covering a whole day’s worth of activities in under four hours.  When you finish your tour, head over to Chinatown for an incredible Chinese meal as a perfect end to the day!

Alcatraz: Prison Has Never Looked This Good

Who would have ever thought that touring a prison would become so popular, and so much fun?! Alcatraz, nicknamed “The Rock,” is a small island located in the middle of San Francisco Bay.  It is known, in part, for some of its most famous inmates: Al Capone and Robert Franklin Stroud, often referred to as the “Birdman of Alcatraz.”

For a comprehensive look inside this famous structure, there are several combination package options.  You can take the tour along with the San Francisco City Tour, or you can also do it as part of your trip to Muir Woods and Sausalito.  Choose the option that works best with your schedule and interests.  While you are in the area, it is worth checking out the 35 minute audio headset tour of the Alcatraz cell block to hear stories of former inmates and prison guards.  This is an optional extra, and is well worth the price to add on.

Ferries are available for departure approximately every half hour, so you can stay as long as you wish.  The average time spent at Alcatraz is just over 2 hours.  Don’t forget to pick up a souvenir on your way out.  You are going to want something to remember this trip by!

These tickets are in high demand and sell out quickly, so reserve your spot at least a week in advance to avoid disappointment.

The Golden Gate City, Full of Golden Opportunities

There are a wealth of opportunities for sightseeing in and around San Francisco, and with so much to see it is easy to get overwhelmed by the sheer scope of it all.  That is why it was so helpful when I discovered all the guided tours that are available in the San Francisco area to help make sense of the city and gain valuable insight into its rich history.

You can see San Francisco by way of a bus, limousine, Jeep, van, cable car, sailboat, or train.  Or, you can make a true adventure out of it by taking in the sights via seaplane, helicopter, horse, or kayak.  In San Francisco, the most popular attraction and a must-see for everyone, is Alcatraz, also known as “The Rock.” Alcatraz was last used as a federal prison and housed such infamous criminals as Al Capone and Robert Franklin Stroud, known as the “Birdman of Alcatraz.”  Alcatraz is open to the public for tours but it is one of the fastest attractions to sell out so it is imperative to plan ahead and book early.  There are a number of combination tour packages that include a trip to Alcatraz along with another popular destination such as Muir Woods.

For an overview of the most popular attractions in the area, the San Francisco City Tour is a must.  In less than 4 hours you will get an excellent overview that includes visits to the Golden Gate Bridge, the Palace of Fine Arts, Ghirardelli Square, and others.

See the Tallest Living Things on the Planet, Plus More!

John Muir Woods has been called the best tree-lovers monument that exists.  President Teddy Roosevelt named this old-growth redwood forest America’s 10th National Monument.  It actually just celebrated its centennial anniversary.  The area is a wonderful place to visit as it so astoundingly beautiful.

If you are looking for a complete tour of the area, try out the Alcatraz Tour with Muir Woods & Sausalito.  This is offered by Muir Woods Tours and gives you a comprehensive look at the area.  For your convenience, the tour bus picks up its passengers at select area hotels making this tour extremely convenient for you and your guests.

The visit to Muir Woods is absolutely wonderful.  The forest is full of giant redwoods, the tallest measuring at 258 feet.  Because these trees are so giant- they are the tallest of all living things-you could park a car under one of these massive trees!  Further north, these redwoods grow even taller; one is 74 feet taller than the Statue of Liberty.  They generally live between 600 and 800 years so don’t worry, they will be there for a very, very long time.

Following your journey through the vast forest, the tour will head over to Sausalito.  This charming waterfront community with a Mediterranean flair is often compared to the French Riviera.  While you visit the area, you can walk along the water and listen to the wave’s crash in, watch the sea lions play, explore the open air market, or take a break and enjoy a snack at one of the local eateries.  It is a beautiful location to you will make a point to visit again.

Lastly, you will arrive at Alcatraz Island to tour the world renowned prison.  Walk through the cell blocks where some of the most notorious felons were retained like Al Capone and George “Machine Gun” Kelly.  Your tour is extremely informative as every person receives an audio headset with stories from former guards and inmates.  While you are there, you can hike along the Agave Trail or head on up to the Cell House where several exhibits are on display for your viewing.

If you are looking to experience some of the greatest parts of not only this area, but of the country, then check out these exciting activities.  Reserve these and other fun vacation attractions through Muir Woods Tours today at www.muirwoodstours.com.

Alcatraz Cruises and Tickets from Fisherman’s Wharf

No one can visit San Francisco, or even California for that matter, without visiting the legendary Alcatraz Island.  It is typically just referred to as Alcatraz and sometimes as ‘The Rock’ as it is simply a rocky island in the middle of the San Francisco Bay.  The famous prison held notable convicts such as Al Capone, James “Whitley” Bulger and Alvin Karpis.

Alcatraz Island Cell Block Tours

Alcatraz Island Cell Block Tours

While Alcatraz is a popular and busy place, you can book online tickets in advance before you visit the infamous location.  The best selling tour ticket is the ‘Day Fare with Audio’ tour which cruises you through the bay to Alcatraz Island and includes an audio-guided cell block tour.  You tour through the prison at your own pace giving you the freedom to look at individual cells, exhibits, or the spectacular views of the Golden Gate Bridge for as long as you wish.  While walking around Alcatraz, you are provided headset highlighting Alcatraz with interviews and stories from former prison guards and inmates.

Another top selling tour is the ‘Alcatraz Night Tour‘ which offers you an after dark experience of the prison that few get to enjoy.  The tour is limited to a few hundred visitors each evening and includes special programs, tours and activities that the day tours do not offer.

You begin your Alcatraz tour by riding the ferry across the bay to The Rock with the addition of live boat narration along the way.  During your walk from the Dock to the Cellhouse, you receive a guided tour and once at the Cellhouse, you experience an audio tour.  Additionally, everyone in the tour receives a keepsake souvenir brochure and an assortment of presentations only offered at night.  If you love how San Francisco looks at night, this tour is perfect as its views of the city are amazing.

Finally, while the ‘Alcatraz Tour & San Francisco Open Top Double Decker Hop-On & Hop-Off Bus Tour’ may be a mouthful, it is a great way to see all the amazing sites San Francisco has to offer in just one tour.  With this tour package, you can enjoy the audio tour of Alcatraz and then visit all the exciting attractions, museums, restaurants, and shops in San Francisco.

Double Decker City Tours

Double Decker City Tours

The Hop-On/Hop-Off flexibility can actually make the bus tour last for two full days!  That ensures you get to see everything you can possible visit while in San Francisco.  Depending on hours and dates you are able to visit Fisherman’s Wharf, Chinatown, North Beach, Wells Fargo Museum, Union Square, the Asian Art Museum, Alamo Square, Golden Gate Bridge and Park, Hyde Street Cable Car and the Palace of Fine Arts.

If you are on a time constraint, you can simply ride the bus through the entire loop where it lasts about 1hr 45 minutes, but if you have the time, I recommend you visit all of these fabulous San Francisco locations.
