Walking in Memphis

Thursday, December 18th, 2008

Visit Memphis, Tennessee – or the “River City” as it is sometimes called – and you will be amazed at all there is to do.  You can stop by Graceland for a look at a wide array of Elvis memorabilia or take a tour of Sun Studios for an insider’s view of the history of Rockabilly music.  There is also a vibrant nightlife scene in Memphis that you have to experience at least once in your life.  These are only a few of the things you will see on your trip to the area.

Singer-songwriter Marc Cohn paid tribute to the city with his hit song “Walking in Memphis,” and for good reason.   He mentions many of the things that distinguish Memphis from other cities, especially the strong musical influence that can be felt in every square inch of the city.  The Delta blues, one of the earliest styles of blues music, originated here, and then of course “The King” himself, Elvis Presley, was born and raised in the Memphis area, rocketing to stardom after being signed by Sun Studios.

Once you visit Graceland, you will have a better understanding of what made Elvis so famous in the first place.  You will walk through the museum and see many of the sparkly jumpsuits he used to wear, along with his collection of awards, gold records, and automobiles.  As an added bonus, you can walk through the section of the museum that is devoted to Elvis’s military service.  You can look through all the items related to his army duties including his fatigues and uniforms.  The Graceland Tour & Ultimate Rock N Roll Tour is a great way to combine all of these things into one trip, allowing you to see not only the history of Elvis’s career, but also the memorable sites that have shaped Memphis and the music industry in general.

If you would like more of an overview of the area without spending all of your time at one attraction or on one subject matter, check out the Historic Memphis Walking Tour, which is offered from March through November when the weather is warmer.  You will learn all about the defining moments in the city’s history, from music to the Civil War and everything in between.  As you walk along the Mississippi waterfront, you will hear stories of how Memphis has changed the American cultural landscape and will visit Cotton Row, several historic Civil War sites, Court Square, and more.  From March through December you can see the darker side of Memphis on a Haunted Ghost Walking Tour that features Handy Park, the Orpheum Theater, and Cotton Row.

You can book your trip and learn about more tour and activity options by visiting Memphis Tours at www.memphistours.us.
