The urge to head out and explore immediately upon your arrival at a destination is strong, especially if you’ve never been before. Just remember, you’re on vacation, and part of the plan should be to sit back and unwind from the your hectic schedule. Once you check into your hotel, take a minute to breathe. Sit back, have a cup of coffee or tea and relish in the fact that you’ve still got your whole vacation to look forward to.

 2. Accept the food, acknowledge the customs, and respect the religion

James A. Michener once said, “If you reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion and avoid the people, you might better stay at home.” He had a valid point. Part of the fun in traveling to new places is experiencing how different it is from your own home. So taste that quirky meat you can’t pronounce, and let loose a little. You’ll be glad you did.

 3. Don’t be afraid to get lost

It’s difficult navigating a foreign land, especially when you’re in a hurry or distracted by the newness of everything. Slow down and let go of that fear of losing your way. Often times the best little restaurants, shops and bars are discovered when you aren’t even looking for them, so take your time and wander a bit. You’ll find your way back – eventually.

 4. Take lots of pictures

But not so many that you’re only viewing the city through the lens of your camera. See everything through your own eyes, and capture your favorite parts on film. You’ll love re-living the vacation by looking at the photos later. Photo tours can be almost as fun as the real thing, especially when you have fun memories to put with the images.

 5. Skip the souvenir shop

For some, this might be a tough one. As you probably know, gift and souvenir shops are successful tourist traps. Everyone wants something to take home to their loved ones, and city-branded paraphernalia are irresistibly alluring. The thing is, picking out presents for your friends and family back home will be less fulfilling if you snag an “I Love This City” T-shirt at the last minute, and the recipient will know you didn’t put much thought into your selection. If you collect shot glasses or key chains, go for it. Otherwise, check out local vendors and manufacturers for some one-of-a-kind mementos.
